How to Choose an Air Mattress

Alternating pressure mattresses and overlays are an essential equipment for anyone at risk of developing pressure ulcers or who have existing pressure ulcers.

They are cost effective bed sore solutions that offer outstanding pressure redistribution and comfort.  Air alternating pressure-relieving mattresses use alternating pressure. This means that air is pumped into cylinders that are placed parallel to each other inside the mattress. Typically operating in sequence, as one set of cylinders gently inflates, the other set deflates. This way the pressure under any part of the body is relieved on a regular basis best providing blood perfusion to at-risk skin areas.

1) The Bubblemat Overlay is affordable, simple to use and offers low risk patients a practical alternative to static pressure care. 130 alternating cell sections gently stimulate the skin’s surface, encouraging increased blood flow and circulation.  Easily transportable, the system is simple to set up and operate. Made of sturdy, waterproof PVC material, the overlay has long panels at head and base that fold under the mattress.

Key features

  • Weight rated to 100kg
  • designed to assist and/or alleviate pressure ulcers
  • affordable alternative to static pressure care
  • quiet and compact
  • individual alternating micro cells for increased blood flow
  • rotate 180° for preferred control unit positioning

2) The Premium 3 alternating pressure mattress overlay is a cost effective option for the patient at lower risk of pressure injury. Features 21 slimline cells to provide a higher number of smaller contact points for a greater degree of comfort, while preventing smaller limbs from sliding between the inflated cells. The reduced cell height lowers overall mattress profile to facilitate independent bed access for patients with limited mobility.

Key features

  • Weight rated to 120kg
  • 1 in 2 alternation cycle for pressure relief over a 12 minute cycle
  • vapour permeable, waterproof top cover with multi stretch fabric to minimise friction and reduce shear
  • premium infection control including welded seams and antibacterial taping
  • compact analogue control unit with fully adjustable pressure settings and visible alarm in the event of low mattress pressure
  • enhanced labelling on top cover and control unit for ease of operation

3) The Premium 5 alternating pressure mattress overlay is especially suited for patients at risk of pressure injury.  This overlay offers solution for the prevention of pressure injury when used in conjunction with a comprehensive prevention strategy.

Key features

  • Weight rated to 150kg
  • 1 in 2 alternation cycle for pressure relief over a 12 minute cycle
  • rapid release CPR tag for emergency deflation
  • vapour permeable, waterproof top cover with multi stretch fabric to minimise friction and reduce shear
  • maximum infection control including welded seams, antibacterial taping and full length waterfall skirt
  • static head cells to add stability and reduce sleep disturbance
  • fully adjustable digital control unit with eight comfort pressure settings; visible and audible alarm; timed transport and static functions for stable patient treatment

4) The Premium 8 full alternating pressure mattress replacement system for users at medium to high risk of pressure injury offers superior functionality, enhanced comfort and optimum infection control. Increased cell depth makes the system well suited to the heavier patient. An effective pressure care solution when used in conjunction with a comprehensive pressure prevention strategy.

Key features

  • Weight rated to 180kg
  • ideal for the heavier patient at medium to high risk
  • deep 200 mm cells to prevent ‘bottoming out’
  • 1 in 2 alternation cycle for pressure relief over a 12 minute cycle
  • rapid release CPR tag for emergency deflation
  • vapour permeable, waterproof top cover with multi stretch fabric to minimise friction and reduce shear
  • maximum infection control including welded seams, antibacterial taping and full length waterfall skirt
  • static head cells to add stability and reduce sleep disturbance
  • fully adjustable digital control unit with eight comfort pressure settings; visible and audible alarm; timed transport and static functions for stable patient treatment

5) The Premium 10 hospital-grade alternating pressure mattress replacement system designed to prevent and treat pressure injuries for patients at high to very high risk. This system is designed to greatly increase comfort while maximising therapeutic benefit.

The unique heel zone ensures effective alternation of the high risk calcaneus and malleolus areas of the lower leg. Combined with lateral side bolsters for additional patient stability, these surfaces are ideal for patients at risk of developing pressure related ulceration. The system also offers the added safety of cell-in-cell technology for greater surface stability and patient safety by protecting the patient from bottoming out.

Key features

  • Weight rated  to 250kg
  • twin compressor digital control unit for faster inflation time and longer periods at ‘zero’ pressure
  • deep 280 mm cells for high degree of comfort and therapeutic benefit
  • pure TPU cells in mid-section for increased comfort, warmth and support to users
  • vapour permeable, waterproof top cover with multi stretch fabric to minimise friction and reduce shear
  • maximum infection control including welded seams, full length waterfall skirt and heavy duty base
  • hinged profile base and permanent side bolsters for increased lateral stability
  • power cord retention system to reduce trip hazard

The Premium 10 King extra wide hospital grade alternating mattress pressure replacement system for patients who prefer a king size sleeping platform. All the features of the Premium 10 with an increased width of 107 to correctly fit a standard size king single bed.
